The school social worker (SSW) provides services to students who receive Special Education Services.  The SSW assists the student in reaching his/her fullest academic and personal potential within the school setting. School social workers are a member of a multidisciplinary educational team that addresses situations and conditions that interfere with the student’s learning process.

Information to Know:

School social workers bring unique skills to the educational setting.

These skills include community organization, group process, family assistance, crisis management, individual casework and a knowledge base of developmental stages and behavioral/emotional challenges. School social work interventions are tailored to meet the needs of the individual student and family.

What might a School Social Worker do?:

· Screening students to identify need for services; develop goals & objectives

· Provides one on one and/or group therapeutic services

· Mediation, resolution and conflict management without violence

· Advocacy for the student, family and school

· Individual, school and community crisis intervention and prevention services.

· Behavior management and intervention services

· Family assistance:
-strengthening home school communication, parenting and behavior management strategies.

· Collaboration with community based service agencies to meet student/family  needs in a holistic, comprehensive fashion.

· Information and referral services

· Provides classroom support for student and teacher

· Staff development and training

Code of Ethics:

School Social Workers abide by and practice under the NASW Professional Code of Ethics and are Licensed Masters Social Workers (LMSW) as well as Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW).
